INTRO: Since 1995, I have done extensive research regarding radon gas and it's effects on the human body. There is absolutely no medical or scientific evidence that radon gas has ever given anyone cancer. In fact, all of the research available suggests just the opposite. "The EPA ignores as well the work of University of Pittsburgh professor Bernard Cohen, whose research has documented the inverse relationship between radon and rates of lung cancer, in 1600 counties, containing 90% of the American population. A model of clarity and rigor, he has grouped and calculated the data in more than 100 ways, adjusting for every conceivable variable. Still the results hold: As, as the radon level in the home increases, the incidence of lung cancer falls!" Dr. Moore, Cato Institute
The links at the bottom of this page are just a few of the articles and research I found. Dr. Cohen has his complete research data available at the University of Pittsburgh. The EPA's research is difficult to find on the internet, because they DON'T want you to read it. It's flawed beyond belief and is the work of Dr. Lynch of the University of Iowa, who's not a scientist, has never worked in the private sector, and is not a medical doctor.
The EPA needed money from Congress back in the early 90's, so they came up with Radon gas. Our kids needed to be saved from something you can't smell, see, feel, measure, or predict what part of a home it will be in at any given time. A billion dollar industry has been created for no reason. But, there's a reason why the EPA has been unable to mandate radon gas mitigation via the courts or building codes: you have to bring proof into a court of law, and they have none.
UPDATE September 1, 2023: Colorado Real Estate Contracts: The Colorado Real Estate commission, run by liberal Democrats, have decided to change the standard Colorado real estate contract recently, by adding real scary words. I know they're scary because they use All UPPER caps and bold text:
From our contracts:
10.13. Radon Disclosure. THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT STRONGLY RECOMMENDS THAT ALL HOME BUYERS HAVE AN INDOOR RADON TEST PERFORMED BEFORE PURCHASING RESIDENTIAL REAL PROPERTY AND RECOMMENDS HAVING THE RADON LEVELS MITIGATED IF ELEVATED RADON CONCENTRATIONS ARE FOUND. ELEVATED RADON CONCENTRATIONS CAN BE REDUCED BY A RADON MITIGATION PROFESSIONAL. RESIDENTIAL REAL PROPERTY MAY PRESENT EXPOSURE TO DANGEROUS LEVELS OF INDOOR RADON GAS THAT MAY PLACE THE OCCUPANTS AT RISK OF DEVELOPING RADON-INDUCED LUNG CANCER. RADON, A CLASS A HUMAN CARCINOGEN, IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF LUNG CANCER IN NONSMOKERS AND THE SECOND LEADING CAUSE OF LUNG CANCER OVERALL. THE SELLER OF RESIDENTIAL REAL PROPERTY IS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THE BUYER WITH ANY KNOWN INFORMATION ON RADON TEST RESULTS OF THE RESIDENTIAL REAL PROPERTY.
I have problems when experts and/or our Democrat politicians, use "strongly recommends", "can be reduced", "may present", "may place", and "any known" in a legal contract. Please note that nowhere in this dyer warning do they say the seller MUST mitigate said radon, and there is NO exact level of Radon gas REQUIRED for mitigation in the contract. "Elevated radon concentrations" is never defined. This is because they can't prove any of these claims in court!!
UPDATE September 1, 2023: The EPA's Poster Boy Stanley Watras, the poster child for the EPA since 1984, is not only still alive and cancer free, his wife and two children still are. One would think that with the massive amounts of radon gas he breathed in at their Pittsburgh home, (over 300 times the allowed picocuries), they all should've been dead years ago. At the minimum, according to the EPA's own research data, should have cancer oozing out of their eyeballs. You can find Stanley on the Linkedin web site. He won't respond regarding his terrible ordeal with Radon back in 84, and his connections to the EPA, but he's alive, so let me know if you can get a response from him.
UPDATE March 23, 2020: What is an EPA "symposium"? This year, the EPA is having it's "symposium" at the "Embassy Suites by Hilton Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort" offers 255 two-room suites just steps away from the ocean. The relaxed atmosphere and array of on-site amenities including tennis courts, water park and Sports & Health Club are sure to give you the vacation you’ve been looking for."
Wish I worked for the EPA. Such a terrible place to go with all the radon gas gushing from the hotel room walls (the hotel has never been tested). No one is allowed to speak if you disagree with the EPA. I had to look up "symposium", just to make sure I knew what I was talking about. (Symposium >noun (pl. symposia or symposiums) 1 a conference or meeting to discuss a particular academic or specialist subject. 2 a collection of related papers by a number of contributors. ORIGIN originally denoting a drinking party: from Greek sumposion, from sumpotes 'fellow drinker'. A social gathering at which there is free interchange of ideas.
Well, the EPA sure can drink, especially when it's at our expense, and, a free interchange of ideas? Only when you agree with our EPA are your invited to speak. There are pictures of the EPA's Dr. Lynch, cheering it up with the EPA and AARST hierarchy.
Local Real Estate Agents: March 15, 2019 and through recently. I'm still arguing with Remax agents, and others, about Radon. They force their agents to "require" radon testing and mitigation. They should stay out of the Physics of Randon and just sell real estate, None of their agents have any knowledge of Engineering or Physics and refuse to do the research. They all rely on the Federal Government to tell them the "truth".
Statefarm letter: March 20, 2019 The following is a letter I sent to Statefarm insurance after they sent me a dire warning about radon gas:
Dear Statefarm,
It sickens me to see Statefarm get on the EPA bus and help drive over Science and Physics in this country. No one has ever gotten Cancer from Radon gas. There IS NO SCIENTIFIC OR MEDICAL EVIDENCE to support the EPA's false claims. They needed money from Congress, so, we now have a billion dollar industry built on made up research data. This is as much a fraud as "mankind causing global warming, or cooling, or climate change, or whatever they are calling it today.".
If you want your kids to be smart in Science, then do not lie to them about Radon gas. Do a search for "radon gas bernard cohen". Dr. Cohen is an American scientist who has done over 50 years of extensive research on radiation. Dr. Cohen, leading Japanese scientist's, and Dr. Kamen and Robinson of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, along with hundred's of thousands of well known scientist's, all believe the EPA is completely wrong in it's conclusions, with no basis in fact or science. I tend to believe well known brilliant scientists, who have extensive knowledge in Physics and Science, then ONE professor at the University of Iowa, Dr. Lynch, who isn't even a Scientist. (the EPA did bring in another non scientist, Dr. Field, to be able to use the plural "the EPA's scientist's"). The Japanese know more about radiation than any culture on the planet, and they disagree with our EPA. Do a search for "radiation hormesis".
I have been fighting this junk science for years along with the ignorance of wind mills, solar panels, and putting our food into our gas tanks. I have just about thrown in the towel. Now I see Statefarm joining the ranks of the incredibly ignorant. Sad, very sad indeed.
Update: April 2, 2020 I'm not sure if it was because of my letters, or if it was just coincidence, but so far, they have not had any more radon info sent to me or on their web site.
Update: September 1, 2024 Still no signs of any radon misinformation on Statefarm's website or in emails. I continue to do business with them. Kudos to the CEO if he had something to do with this. Thank you Statefarm for joining the ranks of the incredibly intelligent.
My thoughts on AARST: The AARST clan love having their symposium's in places like Mission Bay, San Diego, one of the most expensive and fun places to have a government "meeting". We pay for this and they will not allow any "denier" to speak. The EPA's researchers continue to refuse to debate any credible scientist, either at their fun get a way's, or in a public forum. This is typical of people who can not prove their theories.
Take a good look at their web site, and the monster this has created. It's now a billion dollar a year industry created from flawed junk science.
"Professor" Field, more stupid: Professor Field, the guy brought in by the EPA to be able to use the plural "scientist's" also works for the EPA. Quoted off his UI profile: "He serves as a member of United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Science Advisory Board, Radiation Advisory Committee, and also serves as a presidential appointee in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/NIOSH Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health.".
He also was on Social Security disability while getting his PHd: In the meantime, his wife received an appointment at the University of Iowa, and Field, on social security disability, was able to return to college to study for his Ph.D. in preventive medicine while enrolled in a vocational-rehabilitation program. “It gives me insights,” Field said.”I know what it’s like to be disabled from a work-related injury. I have empathy for these workers.” ." FYI: "Preventive medicine PhD" is the type of medicine you study when you can't pass the American medical exams.
Another government leach tenured professor, who is not a medical doctor or a scientist, making claims that can't be proven. I still haven't been able to get the total amount of tax payers money that the University of Iowa has received for pushing this junk science. Lynch and Field do get awards for bringing mountains of cash into UofI every year, which come with extra cash bonuses for them.
Retesting for Radon: Nothing has changed since I started documenting the radon gas craziness. Most people do not re test their home after they have spent thousands of dollars mitigating it. It's "mitigated", we have proof! Look, I have am ugly metal pipe on the outside of my house! Most agents don't push for buyers to request a new radon test for used homes, since it's already been "fixed". A 100 dollar fan and 100 dollars of plastic pipe should make everyone happy. Look, I have a new hole in my concrete floor and a new hole in my stucco, what can go wrong, surly it's working. All that gas must see that hole and go right to it. For sure that's happening.
Just a note, I want Radon gas in my own home, since it helps to build up an immunity against cancer. I DID NOT mitigate my home, and I live on top of a granite rock! Think about it, giving my clients cancer, would be very bad for business.
